Entering God’s Rest

Genesis 2:1–3 (NIV)

Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

Reflection

On the seventh day, God rested—not because He was tired, but because His work was complete. His rest was a declaration of fulfillment, not exhaustion. This moment became the foundation of the Sabbath, a sign that God alone makes His people holy (Exodus 31:12–17) and a reminder of Israel’s deliverance from slavery (Deuteronomy 5:15).

True rest is always connected to freedom. Slaves do not rest; only the free can. In the same way, Jesus frees us from the bondage of sin and striving. When we rest in Him, we declare that our salvation is accomplished by His finished work and not by our effort We are not made right with God through performance, discipline, or religious activity. Salvation is a gift, freely given through Christ.

When we trust in what He has already accomplished, we enter His rest. The Sabbath was never only about a day, it pointed to a Person. In Jesus, we cease striving and find the deep soul‑rest our hearts long for.

Rest becomes an act of faith. It is choosing to believe that God is enough, His work is complete, and His grace is sufficient.

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for completing the work of my salvation. Teach me to stop striving and to rest fully in Your grace. Amen.
